By the end of pregnancy, most women are tired and ready to meet their baby. As they approach the due date, my patients often ask about natural ways to induce labor.
There are many urban legends about natural remedies that are said to move things along. Some of these methods are harmless; others may have risks or side effects that are not pleasant. Most do not really work at all
Let's look at the truth behind nine of the method is "natural" of inducing labor at home, and why you may or may not want to try it.
castor oil to induce labor is one of the more popular, supposedly advice "natural". Because castor oil is a laxative, it causes irritation or contraction of the uterus - but often as a result of angry GI and diarrhea, not labor. In randomized trials (the gold standard in medical research), the woman who swallowed castor oil is not likely to go into labor than women who had taken no castor oil
There are some foods and recipes out there. - like this or eggplant parmesan -. which is reportedly the cause of labor and is likely to contain castor oil or something similar as a "dormant" they
But the oil itself is generally fallen out of favor given significant side effects (again, GI upset and diarrhea) and inability to induce labor right
moderate exercise is safe -. and - during pregnancy. Unfortunately, there is no exercise that have been proven to induce labor. I have a friend who walked 40 blocks of the city unsuccessfully trying to persuade her out of the child.
randomized trials have failed to show that acupuncture or pressure (massage) will induce labor. Given these medications can be quite expensive, I suggest you skip it and save that money for diapers.
Some people still buy into it, however, so do not be surprised if your favorite pedicurist refused to do a foot massage when you are pregnant. Many people believe a foot massage in a section above the ankle can cause miscarriage or premature delivery
Fresh pineapple -. Core, in particular - contains an enzyme called bromelain, which is used as a meat tenderizer. This enzyme breaks down protein in the network and what make the tongue tingle or mouth sores develop when you eat pineapple.
The popular theory is that somehow bromelain from pineapple makes its way into your cervix and cause tissue breakdown there, causing the cervix to soften and stimulate employment.
There is no evidence to support this theory, however. inactive enzymes in the stomach acid and only partially absorbed by the body
There is no harm enjoyed serving pineapple in term - .. although the fruit is known to cause significant heartburn
It is not clear whether or not sexual activity on the run will help induce labor. One study has even shown that sex may actually reduce the possibility of giving birth.
Intercourse generally harmless during pregnancy. However, with certain conditions, such as placenta or vasa previa, your obstetric provider may recommend "pelvic rest" or "no per vagina." Not following these recommendations can cause bleeding and endanger your health and your baby's health.
Herbs like blue and black cohosh, raspberry leaf tea, and evening primrose oil has been sold as a way to "prepare" your uterus for labor.
Not so fast. Cohosh has been linked to fetal heart failure and stroke as well as maternal complications during childbirth. randomized trials have shown no increased likelihood of labor with this herb, ad safety is unknown. Avoid drugs should really during pregnancy.
nipple stimulation causes the release of oxytocin, which is in nursing mothers caused "disappointment" ASI. It also causes uterine contractions and back to the normal size of the uterus (called "involution"), which is why women who breastfed generally have heavier bleeding for a shorter amount of time than women who bottle-baby.
Nipple stimulation during pregnancy can also cause uterine contractions, though it may not cause a true labor. It can also cause severe, prolonged contractions that cause fetal distress and harm. That's why I do not recommend using nipple stimulation to induce labor
Spicy foods affect the body in the same way as castor oil -. GI angry leads to irritation of the uterus and contractions. As with castor oil, this contraction rarely produces the right workforce.
Spicy foods can also cause significant heartburn, that pregnant women tend to stick. Bottom line :. You may regret their tacos and then
Your obstetric provider may begin stripping the membranes around a week before your due date. This process - in which a finger is inserted through the cervical opening and swept to the left and right in a clockwise motion to separate the lower part of the membrane lining of the uterus - may be uncomfortable for some women and is only possible if your cervix. dilatation
The available data do not show an increase in spontaneous labor onset followed this procedure - but it is also associated with vaginal bleeding, cramping, and occasional rupture of membranes
with my second. child, I was bleeding heavily after stripping membrane which required a trip to the labor and delivery to evaluate my baby - with my son in tow. It makes me feel anxious, it was comfortable, and did not bring on labor.
If you are interested in stripping the membranes to induce labor, discuss with your operator, and he can help you decide whether it is the right choice for you.

The medical community study medications and interventions (such as oxytocin to induce labor) both before and after implementation to ensure their safety and efficacy and to ensure there are no complications unexpected or adverse effects have occurred
Many women swear by certain natural methods, but a woman who is close to him because it is very likely to go into labor do not care what he did -. or eat - at the time.
Many of the above natural ways to induce labor may not be harmful. However, that may have unwanted side effects or can not not safe for you or your baby. , Talking to providers of obstetric you in advance about any method you intend to try and get her opinion on what is safest
We recommend that you take the right approach to the "natural" for workers - let it happen when it happens , After all, only about 2 percent of women remain pregnant more than 1 to 2 weeks past their due date
Think of it as your first demonstration in patience -. Something you will definitely need often as mothers
