Improving survival rates for extremely premature infants means it is now possible to save the lives of babies born at 22 weeks, the guidance said.
Previous recommended that only infants born at 23 weeks or later given the treatment to save their lives
But there is now evidence of those born early may survive -. Although only in small numbers - the British Association of Perinatal Medicine said
said most will die but all three may survive where treatment may
Prof Dominic Wilkinson, a consultant neonatologist who helped draft. , guidance, said that since the previous guidance issued, progress means care doctor trying to save the lives of some babies born at 22 weeks.
He said the evidence from the cases have convinced BAPM for updating guidance.
He said it was "fantastic news" that some babies born in the early stages as they are now living
But he added :. "Very high risk means that it is not always the right thing to do to provide intensive medical care."
survival for babies born before 22 weeks are not considered likely because the lungs are not sufficiently advanced.
Ruben and Jenson Powell became twin boys youngest surviving premature birth in the UK when they were born in August last year at 22 weeks and six days.
The parents Jennie and Kaya, of Brighton, is in Cornwall when Mrs Powell went into labor.
They were flown to a specialist hospital in Oxford where the twins were born the next day.
"This really is a story of hope and wonder," said Mrs. Powell. "They challenge each set is likely that they are given."
Eight days after the birth, Ruben underwent lifesaving surgery when his intestines failed but struggled through despite the low survival rate.
Jenson also suffered from weakness in his lungs but pulled through.
The twins must have had 20 blood transfusions, injections of eye and laser surgery to prevent blindness and survived both blood poisoning and pneumonia.
Despite the progress, the chances of survival are still low
Most babies born at 22 weeks will die
Data from 2016 show there were 486 births at this stage -. , and more than 300 cases, the baby did not survive labor.
of those who do, 140 are not in conditions where trying to save them considered possible and they would have given palliative care to ease their suffering.
But where treatment other than palliative care is given, just over one-third of the babies survived.
guidance says decision on whether the bid Potential lifesaving treatment depends on the circumstances of individual infants.
The decision should be reached by specialists in consultation with parents.
But that said intensive care simply will not work for everyone.
Once you get to more than 22 weeks, the chances of survival increase week-by-week.
The same number were born at 23 weeks and in about half of cases of attempted care aid.
In 2016, 38% survived - .. Two levels 10 years earlier
After the baby up to 26 weeks, the treatment takes place in a lot of cases and 82% survive
But despite the increase in survival, a significant number of these babies will have a severe disability.
at 22 weeks, a third of those who survive do. At 26 weeks it is one of 10.
Prof Andrew Whitelaw, an expert in neonatal medicine at Bristol University, said the guidance was "very useful".
He said it was important to not be too fixated on the number of weeks and not the baby's condition at birth and different attitudes on what is deemed "unacceptable defect" is an important factor.
There are a variety of reasons.
For years, doctors and medical team has gotten wider gradually better to treat the mother and baby.
Steroids administered before giving birth helps increase lung function.
The technique for ventilation and prevent infection in extremely premature infants improved.
The number of extremely premature infants born at the specialist hospital has increased as well.
A decade ago just over half are located. Now almost 80%.
The US and Europe tighten restrictions-up in an attempt to stop the pandemic coronavirus.
