Pregnancy can be stressful - there is a lot to think about and even avoided for nine months. Taking the right supplements. Avoid certain types of fish and raw foods. Steering clear of some medications. Controlling blood sugar. The list goes on.

Trying to control blood sugar should be among the most important on the list, as one of seven pregnant women with gestational diabetes. This condition occurs during pregnancy when the body becomes resistant to insulin and does not create the right amount of insulin to regulate blood sugar.

There are two main reasons to avoid gestational diabetes. First, women who are diagnosed with gestational diabetes have a greater risk for developing type 2 diabetes 5-10 years down the road types. Second, infants of mothers with gestational diabetes are at greater risk for having a heavier birth weight, cesarean delivery, and birth complications. Children of mothers with gestational diabetes are also at a higher risk of struggling with obesity, and type 2 diabetes later in life.

The good news is that healthy lifestyle choices can help you avoid gestational diabetes, and if you end up with these conditions, it can be well managed with appropriate medical intervention.

It's much easier to achieve a healthy weight when your body does not support two people. Control your weight and blood sugar before pregnancy will give you and your baby a healthy start.

Exercise can help prevent weight gain too much during pregnancy, which in turn helps reduce the risk of gestational diabetes. It also helps your body more sensitive to insulin your pancreas is making it possible for blood sugar control better. Shoot for 30 minutes of moderate-intensity, low-impact cardiovascular exercise most days per week. Walking, swimming, stationary cycling, and elliptical is a good choice. Please check with your doctor before starting an exercise program.

Achieving a healthy diet will help you achieve the number of such grass-weight during pregnancy. Eat portion controlled healthy carbohydrates, such as grains, non-starch vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts and low-fat milk. Stick to lean protein and foods with healthy fats such as nuts. Limit added sugar and avoid sweet drinks as much as possible. Drink plenty of water.

Make sure you attend all scheduled doctor's visit you. Approximately 24-28 weeks, you will be screened for gestational diabetes. If you are diagnosed with the condition, it will be important to see a Certified Diabetes Educator or Registered Dietitian. He will help you with lifestyle management and monitoring of glucose.

While these tips can definitely help prevent gestational diabetes, some people will still be struggling to control their blood sugar despite living a healthy lifestyle. Some women will require further interventions such as insulin injections. However, when the blood sugar is stored in a good range, know that by doing so you give yourself and your baby the healthiest possible start.
